Seeing Stars Quilt-along, tips for the triangles from Essie's Quilts

We are piecing the blocks for the Seeing Stars Handi Quilter quilt-along this month. There are a lot of half-square triangles in this quilt, which means there are bias edges. You have to be careful when working with bias edges because they stretch very easily.

Last week I told you I make my half square triangles (HST) two at a time. I draw a line from point to point on one square and match it up with another square. Then I stitch 1/4 inch away on both sides of the line. I cut on the line and I end ...

Seeing Stars Quilt-along piecing the blocks from Essie's Quilts

It’s April, so this month we are piecing the blocks for the Handi Quilter quilt-along, Seeing Stars. Last month we chose fabrics and cut out our pieces. If you are just learning about this quilt-along it’s not too late to join the fun.

Find the pattern here: https://handiquilter.com/product/quilt-top-pattern-seeing-stars/

Find the hints and hacks page here: https://handiquilter.com/download/152247/

Piecing

I have to make a confession here. I’m not so much a “read-the-pattern-and-follow-the-directions” type quilter as I am a “look-at-the-picture-and-sew-the-pieces-to-look-like-the-picture” type quilter.  Can you relate? Let’s take a poll. Tell us ...

AI and Longarm Quilting from Essie's Quilts

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is on all the news channels lately. The implications for the abuse of this technology are mind-blowing. That’s why there’s so much controversy. But AI can be so useful and sometimes fun!

Handi Quilter is no stranger to robotics and artificial intelligence. After all we have Pro-Stitcher robotic system for our machines, which everyone LOVES!  But Pro-Stitcher doesn’t talk to us……yet.

I wondered what AI would have to say about longarm quilting, so I got on the wait list to give Bard a go. Using Google to get information about just about anything ...

Quilt-a-long Selecting Fabric and Cutting from Gwen's Quilts

Have you started on your Seeing Stars quilt-a-long quilt? It’s not too late! This month (March) we are selecting fabric and cutting. I will share my progress and thoughts as we go. My friend Pam is also going to quilt along and I’ll share her approach as well.

Selecting Fabrics

My Choices

Since this quilt is mostly scrappy, I started with a fat quarter pack from my stash that was very “well-aged”.  It gave me a start on my color palette. Then I added in some additional fat quarters for more variety.

I wanted to follow the hack ...

Spring Quilt Show – Are you ready? from Gwen's Quilts

The Spring Quilt show season is gearing up. This weekend alone has 3 major shows just in the southeast US. QuiltCon in Atlanta, GA; AQS QuiltWeek in Daytona Beach; Fl, and the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton, VA.

Quilters are ready to get out and go. We start looking for that next project, with happy spring color after a long cold winter. A quilt show is the ideal place for getting inspiration, buying supplies and learning new techniques. Chances are you’ll find a show in your neck of the woods during the next few months. Here’s a handy ...

5 MORE Things To Do With Quilty Friends from Gwen's Quilts

Last week we explored 5 things to do with your quilty friends. Here is a continuation of that list, 5 more things to do.

6. Go on a Shop Hop

This is something you can tailor to your group. Just plan a day to visit all your local-ish shops together. Or get in on an organized shop hop that offers special deals, prizes and lots of fun. Ask at your guild or favorite shop about what’s available in your area. There are some state-wide shop hops too! Check out Shop Hop Inc on Facebook to see if there’s ...

5 Things To Do with Quilty Friends from Gwen's Quilts

Do you have a group of quilty friends? Here are 5 suggestions of things you can do together, just for fun.

1. Join a guild

This is one you can do solo, if you want to make some new quilty friends! Quilt guilds offer many opportunities to learn new things and to share your quilting skills with others. It’s a place where you can say you just made 128  two-inch flying geese and they will know you are not talking about migrating birds. And they will appreciate just how much work you did! You’ll be inspired by the ...

Signature Quilt – the story from Essie's Quilts

Back on Dec 20, 2022 we aired a HQ Watch and Learn Quilting Show about Signature Quilts. You can watch it here. In the show Kim and Kristina share several kinds of signature quilts. One of them was a quilt that was gifted to Handi Quilter by my guild, The Southern Wake Quilters’ Guild, here in beautiful North Carolina. Every quilt tells a story, especially signature quilts.

Several guild members created spool blocks and signed them. I had the honor and privilege of quilting it. Kim mentions in the video that there is a story behind the quilt. And what ...

Temperature Quilt from Essie's Quilts

I made a temperature quilt for 2022. Have you heard of them? Just Google temperature quilts and you’ll find lots of examples!

Making a Temperature Quilt

The idea is to record the high and low temperature for each day. Assign a fabric (color) to temperature ranges and use the fabric associated with the high and low temps each day to make a block. Sew all the blocks together in chronological order and you’ll end up with a visual representation of the year’s weather. It can be pretty darn beautiful!

Choose your block

You can choose whatever block ...
